“After I know how thoroughly disgusting the hair brushes are, I feel a slight pinch of shame” , Lizzie told me.
My friend Lizzie has used her brushes for 2 years and has not really thought about cleaning them. Sometimes, she will pick the hair out, but that is about as far as she will go. She told me about this and I think that I should write an article about how to clean the hair brushes.
Hairbrushes are similar to sponges or carpets. They harbour a whole bunch of unwanted stuff. They trap hair (of course), dust, dirt, oils, old product and can even trap dust mites.
This is what really got me: each time you brush with an unclean hairbrush, you actually re-deposit grease, product, dust and dead skin cells back into your hair. Need a barf bag? Further, your brush smells and loses efficacy when it’s clogged up (no surprise there). If that is not motivation enough to clean your brushes, I don’t know what is!
It is better to clean your hair brushes after using it. Or if you do not want to clean it so frequently, once a week is Ok. Do not leave your hair brushes uncleaned for 1 or 2 years.
It is nasty and untidy to do so, and will do bad to your health.
